BlackBerry 10 apps top 120,000

Thorsten Heins

BlackBerry announced that there are now 120,000 apps for its BlackBerry 10 platform, after adding 50,000 titles in the four months since the platform was launched.

Speaking at the BlackBerry Live conference in Orlando, BlackBerry president and CEO Thorsten Heins said: “BlackBerry has a thriving ecosystem with BB10 and we’ve had a great response from our developer community.”

The company launched its first BlackBerry 10 device, the Z10, in January with a healthy (if uninspiring) 70,000 apps already available in BlackBerry World.

Heins announced that music recognition app SoundHound, Bloomberg and Mortal Combat have all launched on BlackBerry 10 while synthesiser maker Moog has selected the platform as the second after iOS to offer its app.

It was also revealed that Skype has launched a version of its app for the BlackBerry 10.1 update, which is rolling out on Z10 devices from today. The update also adds HDR camera capture, an improved BlackBerry hub and new keyboard features.

Heins also touted the benefits for developers of working with the company saying that app revenue per user on BlackBerry 10 is double that of Google Play.  “You can be sure that we’re committed to being the best partner for developers. We help you to be successful,” he added.
