Qualcomm is expected to supply the bulk of chipset orders for high-end Android smartphones next year after top vendors, including Samsung, HTC, Sony Mobile, LG and Xiaomi, have opted to use the company’s Snapdragon 820 CPU, according to a DigiTimes report.

The company’s Snapdragon 820 has addressed the overheating problem of its predecessor, the Snapdragon 810 (an issue that saw the San Diego-based vendor lose Samsung as a customer for its Galaxy S6), while also improving the performance and battery life, sources told DigiTimes.

Smartphone makers have selected the new processor for more than 70 models, including Samsung’s and HTC’s flagship models to launch in Q1 and LG’s and Sony Mobile’s new releases in Q2.

The Snapdragon 820 comes with a quad-core architecture and is being built using Samsung’s second-generation 14nm FinFET LPP (Low Power Plus) process node.

The news will boost Qualcomm after a difficult period which saw the vendor carry out a strategic review into its future business model. This week Qualcomm’s board opted not to split the vendor in two, believing that “the company’s current corporate and financial structure bests positions Qualcomm to maintain its technology leadership and product strength”.
