South Korea’s KT will invest KRW150 billion ($130 million) on building a network for the so called “Internet of Small Things (IoST)”.

Korea Times claims the company will launch the “world’s first” nationwide LTE-M network dedicated to IoST, which will allow “massive connectivity between sensors collecting low volume data, with minimum electricity consumption”.

KT said it will invest in the narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) network, and offer approximately 100,000 IoST sensor modules to developers, free of charge for the first year, to drive adoption.

The company’s SVP for its IoT business division, Kim June-keun, said at a press conference in Seoul that KT aims to increase the “number of connected IosT modules to 4 million by 2018 to lead the IoT business”.

June-keun added that IoST can be applicable to every industrial sector, and said the company will “provide modules almost limitlessly to developers to fulfil diverse business needs that we cannot yet imagine”.

At the press conference, the company also showcased a bicycle monitoring system, and a smart blood transportation box, powered by the LTE-M network.
