India’s operators added just 10 million mobile users in Q2 and now have a total of 915 million connections, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) of India.

Mobile growth slowed to 1.2 per cent from Q1, compared to a year-on-year growth rate of 4.76 per cent.

India’s fixed-line connections actually dropped by 500,000 to 28 million.

The country’s tele-density increased slightly to 75.8 per cent.

The number of internet subscribers expanded 3 per cent in the April-June period to 259 million.

ARPU for GSM operators rose 5.3 per cent during the quarter to INR119 ($1.94) and CDMA ARPU increased 6.7 per cent to INR113 ($1.84).

TRAI said the country’s license fees increased 6.6 per cent to INR35 billion ($570 million) from the previous quarter.

According to GSMA Intelligence, India has 13 mobile operators and 70 per cent SIM penetration. The country has a population of 1.3 billion people and 95 per cent of mobile connections are prepaid. Just 7 per cent of connections are 3G, but the 3G market is growing at 45 per cent annually.

GSMA Intelligence states Bharti Airtel is the market leader with a 23 per cent market share (211 million connections), followed by Vodafone India with a 19 per cent share (174 million connections).
