Some vendors or operators might rely on users inputting a few digits or using a fingerprint as a passcode but Japan’s NTT Docomo and Fujitsu have unveiled what they claim is the world’s first smartphone with iris recognition technology.

Fujitsu’s new Arrows NX F-04G is an Android smartphone with a 5.2-inch screen scheduled for release at the end of May, one of ten devices unveiled by Docomo in its summer line-up.

Iris recognition technology could be used to unlock a device but also to authenticate a payment.

Biometric technology has started to appear on handsets but with more of a focus to date  on fingerprint encryption, including Apple devices featuring Touch ID, Huawei Ascend Mate 7, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung GalaxyS6 Edge and Aquos Zeta (the latter three devices also feature in Docomo’s summer line-up).
