Yahoo has ended availability of its BlackBerry app as part of a previously-revealed consolidation of its products.

The BlackBerry app for the web portal will no longer be available to download or be supported by Yahoo from 1 April.

Explaining the reasoning for the move, Yahoo said in a blog post: “Ultimately, we’re making these changes in an effort to sharpen our focus. By continuing to hone in on our core products and experiences, we’ll be able to make our existing products the very best they can be.”

Chief executive Marissa Mayer said last month that the company could benefit from reducing the number of smartphone apps it offers. Speaking at an investor conference she said reducing the current “scattered” portfolio to between 12 and 15 apps would be beneficial.

Other products in line to be cut are Yahoo Avatars, representing users on different services, as well as Yahoo App Search and Yahoo Updates API.
