Facebook will launch a standalone news app called Notify next week, which will send users alerts about stories published from professional media outlets like Vogue and The Washington Post, according to Financial Times.

The development comes just weeks after the company launched its Instant Articles service for iPhone users, allowing them to load certain stories in their news feed “ten times faster than a standard mobile web article”.

It is evident that the company wants to make headway in the mobile news space against rivals like Snapchat and Twitter.

Apple too came out with a news aggregator app in September while Google has partnered with 30 publishers on its Accelerated Mobile Pages initiative.

According to an earlier report about the upcoming Notify app, users will be able to choose publications to follow and topics for which they want breaking news alerts.

Partnering outlets will be able to send mobile notifications to their followers instantly, much like a Tweet. Notifications will have a 100 character limit and contain a link to the news article, the report added.

The social media giant has several standalone apps already, like Groups and Moments, and made $3.3 billion in Q3 2015 from mobile ad revenue.
