July was a record breaking month for the App Store, revealed Apple CEO Tim Cook, with it seeing the highest monthly billings and the biggest amount paid out to developers.

Cook took to Twitter to break the news, adding that App Store developers have now earned more than $50 billion in total since it went live in 2008.

The feat means it has taken just over seven months for the company to pay out an additional $10 billion to developers, after boasting it had forked out nearly $40 billion at the start of the year.

Its bumper July has been linked to the widely successful Pokemon Go, which the company said had set a new app store record for first week downloads on the iPhone and iPad, following its launch in numerous markets throughout the last month.

Pokemon Go generates money through in-app purchases, of which Apple takes 30 per cent.

In last week’s quarterly results release, which did not account for July, Cook also talked up the company’s services unit, which grew 19 per cent year on year, with App Store revenue up 37 per cent to a new (albeit unspecified) high.
